“I don’t think this glue is ever going to come out of these pants,” I grumble as I scratch at the stain.

Rory laughs again. “It’s washable.”

I glare at the back of Rory’s head as we walk to the front of the nursery to meet the other girls. When they catch sight of me, their reaction is comical. Ari’s mouth drops open and Elle gasps and immediately comes to my side.

“What happened to you?” Elle asks as she surveys the damage.

I identify the stains by pointing at them one by one. “Glue, paint, juice, poo.”

“Poo?” Ari asks with a nose wrinkle.

“The Simmons are apparently very lenient with their potty training,” I answer with a shrug.

Ari walks up to me and reaches up toward my head, plucking something from my hair. “Goldfish,” she explains, handing me the cracker.

I smile wryly. “Thanks.”

“Are you okay?” Elle asks me in concern, taking in my disheveled appearance.

“It was fun. Mostly. Except for the Simmons kid,” I qualify.

Elle glowers at Rory. “I notice you appear unaffected.”

Rory smiles. “With experience comes wisdom.”

We start walking out the doors and I want to ask Elle what her plans are today and if I can join, but I spent the entire day with her yesterday, and I’m sure two days back-to-back would break some kind of protocol.

“What are you doing today?” Elle asks me.

I shrug. “No real plans. You?”

She considers this. “Probably same as last week.”

“We’re going to The Cantina again tonight, want to join?” Rory asks me.

I smile in relief. “Absolutely.”

Elle smiles brilliantly. “Great! We can meet in the square again if you want, sometime this afternoon. The shops close at six on Sundays.”

I nod. “See you there.”

How pathetic would it be to eat lunch and go straight to the square and wait for her? Asking for a friend.
